Our house has an addition — does that wall behave differently?

Often, yes. The seam between an original build and a later addition is exactly where assumptions about a wall stop being safe.

• The original wall

  Depending on the era, that could be plaster and lath or early drywall, over framing that predates any consistent spacing standard. We locate the actual member rather than trust a guess based on the house's age.

• The addition side

  Newer additions are typically straightforward drywall over standard framing, and usually the easier of the two walls to plan a cable run through.

• Where the two meet

  If your preferred TV spot straddles that seam, tell us. We'll want to see it before quoting rather than assume one wall type covers the whole run. It's a small detail on a floor plan, but it can be the difference between a bracket that goes in cleanly and one that needs a second visit.

Choosing a projector over a second TV

Low ambient light and a real blank wall are the two things a basement rec room already has that a living room usually doesn't.

• Plan the cable route before the ceiling closes up

  A lot of Markham basements get finished after move-in, which is exactly the window to run power and signal to the ceiling properly, rather than surface-mount conduit later because the drywall's already up.

  Once you're comparing a ceiling-mounted projector against a similarly priced TV, the projector usually wins on sheer screen size in a room that's dark enough to use it.

  Cornell, Berczy, Wismer and Angus Glen are mostly newer builds, and they're straightforward once you know what's behind the drywall. Framing is usually wood, but engineered lumber and the occasional steel stud turn up, and the spacing doesn't always follow the textbook. We scan, then confirm by hand before anything is drilled.

  Great rooms are the other thing. Those two-storey walls tempt people to mount high, and height is the one decision you live with every evening. We settle it with you before the bracket goes up.

• Condos and apartments

  The towers along the Highway 7 corridor are concrete, which is the easy part. The building is the slower part — most have insurance and elevator requirements to clear first. • Older and custom homes

  Unionville and Markham Village bring plaster and lath, framing that ignores modern spacing, and finished millwork nobody wants extra holes in. Scanners read plaster badly, so we verify physically and keep the number of holes to a minimum.

  Feature walls and custom cabinetry need the mount planned around the joinery rather than the other way round. If a wall isn't right for the TV you've bought, we'll tell you before we start rather than force it.

What about heritage homes in Unionville?

Those get handled gently. Older Unionville and Markham Village houses often carry plaster and lath, with framing that ignores any modern spacing rule.

  A scanner reads plaster badly. We verify physically, then keep the number of holes to a minimum.

• Wires without the damage

  Where an in-wall run would mean opening heritage plaster, a slim painted channel is the less invasive and more sensible answer.
