When a Scarborough exterior wall turns out to be solid brick
Not every older exterior near the lake is a veneer over studs — sometimes it’s solid brick straight through, and that changes the whole approach.

Full brick and a brick veneer aren’t the same material
Some older Scarborough exteriors are solid, double-wythe brick right through the wall rather than a decorative skin over studs. When that’s the case, the anchor changes completely — sleeve or wedge anchors set into masonry, not a screw hunting for wood behind a thin brick face.

A veneer wall usually keeps a uniform running pattern with no bricks turned end-on. Solid brick often shows a header course tying the layers together. Either way, a five-minute look at the coursing on site settles it more reliably than a photo ever could.
What’s behind it
A hollow sound doesn’t always mean timber
Knock-test logic works less often than people assume, especially on newer partition walls and some townhouse party walls across Scarborough.

Steel shows up more than you’d expect
Interior partition walls in some apartment buildings and newer townhouse rows occasionally use light-gauge steel instead of solid timber. Both sound hollow under a knuckle, so we reach for a magnetic stud finder instead of guessing.

The fastener has to match the metal
A standard wood screw strips out of light-gauge steel almost immediately. Self-tapping screws built for metal studs are what hold, and it’s a five-second swap once we know what we’re driving into.

The swing and reach of a full-motion arm puts real ongoing load on the fixing points, more than a fixed bracket ever will. On steel framing we plan the anchor pattern with that leverage in mind rather than the minimum that would technically hold.

What moves the number is the size of the screen, what the wall is made of, and where the TV needs to sit. Marble, stone, under-cabinet and above-fireplace jobs take longer and need different anchors, so we quote those directly.

Scarborough Changes Street by Street
Where you are in Scarborough tells us most of what we need to know. Birch Cliff and Cliffside, down toward the lake, are some of the oldest streets we work. Agincourt and Guildwood are post-war suburban. Malvern is later again. And along the Kingston Road, Eglinton and Sheppard corridors you’re into apartment buildings, which is a different job from any of them. Scarborough Village and the older lakeside streets nearby fall into the same older-construction category as Birch Cliff, just further east.

Post-war construction is not predictable
Framing that ignores modern spacing, plaster over lath, and two or three rounds of renovation layered on top. A scanner reading through that is a starting point, not an answer, so we confirm by hand before anything is drilled. None of that is a problem for a mount that’s properly anchored — it just means the five minutes spent confirming what’s there is never wasted time.

Steel studs behave differently
Where we meet steel rather than timber, the fixing changes — a wood screw into a steel stud will not hold. That’s worth establishing from a photo before the appointment rather than discovering with the drill in hand. It’s an easy thing to miss from a photo alone too, so a magnetic finder on-site settles it in seconds rather than assumptions settling it wrong.

Renting in a Scarborough tower
Those buildings are poured concrete, which is the easy half — masonry anchors, and nothing shifts afterwards. The lease is the other half. Some want the holes filled and painted at the end, some say nothing at all, so tell us which yours is and we’ll keep the fixing footprint as small as your TV allows. Either way the concrete itself never changes — it’s the paperwork and the patch-up expectations that vary from one building to the next.
What’s Behind a Scarborough Wall

Post-war houses and back-splits
A lot of Scarborough's housing went up through the middle of the last century, and those walls are usually wood studs behind drywall or plaster. Wood framing is the most forgiving surface to mount to, and cable can run inside the wall.
The caveat is age. Older plaster reads badly on a scanner, spacing isn't always regular, and a wall that's been renovated once or twice can hide strapping, old wiring or a patched opening. We confirm by hand before drilling. Back-splits in particular can hide an extra layer of subfloor or furring strip partway up a wall from an old renovation, one more reason a scan alone isn't the final word.

Apartment and condo towers
The tower stock along the main corridors is concrete, which is the most secure thing you can mount to — hammer drill, masonry bit, sleeve anchors, and nothing shifts afterwards.
Cable can't be buried in a concrete wall, so it goes into a slim painted channel instead. Buildings commonly want a certificate of insurance on file, and often an elevator booking, before a contractor is allowed up. Interior partition walls inside the same unit are a different story again — often steel stud rather than concrete, so we check both surfaces before settling on hardware.

Basements, rentals and commercial rooms
Basement and lower-unit walls are often concrete or block, sometimes with a framed and finished wall built in front. Those two need different hardware, so we establish which one it is before choosing anchors.
On the commercial side we handle screens for shops, offices and meeting rooms, including SmartBoard installation, usually scheduled outside business hours so nothing interrupts the working day.

What's behind a post-war Scarborough house wall?
