Three Types of TV Wall Mount, and When Each One Is Right

Almost every TV on almost every wall ends up on one of these three. The right choice is decided by where the TV sits relative to your eyes and whether it ever needs to move.

Fixed mounts

The TV sits flat and close to the wall and stays exactly where you put it. The cleanest look of the three, and the one to pick when the screen is going at eye level on an ordinary wall.

  • Lowest profile — the screen sits closest to the wall
  • Best choice for a plain wall at seating height
  • Fewest moving parts, nothing to work loose
  • Installation from $179.99 for TVs up to 65 inches

Tilting mounts

Same flat-to-the-wall look, but the screen angles downward. This is the one you want any time the TV is going higher than eye level — above a fireplace, above a mantel, or high on a bedroom wall.

  • Angles down to kill glare and neck strain
  • The right answer above a fireplace or mantel
  • Still sits close to the wall when level
  • Installation from $179.99 for TVs up to 65 inches
Mounting above a fireplace

Full-motion mounts

The screen pulls away from the wall, swivels and tilts. Worth it if you watch from more than one spot, if a window puts glare on the screen at a particular time of day, or if you ever need to reach behind the TV.

  • Swings out, swivels and angles
  • Best pick for a narrow condo living room
  • Lets you reach the ports without dismounting
  • Installation from $189.99 — or take the combo below

Those figures are the installation price, not the bracket. The bracket is quoted separately — except in the combo deal below, which is the one package where both are in a single number.

Getting it right

How to Pick a Mount That Actually Fits

Two numbers decide whether a bracket fits your TV, and one more decides whether it will hold on your wall. Get those wrong and no amount of installing fixes it.

What decides the bracket

  • VESA pattern — the spacing of the four threaded holes on the back of the TV
  • Panel weight — the real weight, not the shipping weight on the box
  • Screen size — the arm has to be rated past your panel, not just to it
  • Viewing position — where you actually sit, which sets the height
  • Glare — where the windows are, which often decides fixed versus full-motion

What decides the anchoring

  • Wood studs — the straightforward case
  • Metal studs — most GTA condos; needs a toggle rated for the panel
  • Concrete and brick — sleeve or wedge anchors into solid material
  • Plaster and lath — common in older Toronto homes, checked before drilling
  • Stone, tile and marble — quoted from a photo, drilled properly or not at all

Bought a bracket already? Bring it. We’ll check it against the TV and the wall before we drill, and if it isn’t right we’ll say so before we start rather than after. Have a look at what installation costs or the full installation service.

Questions we get asked

TV Wall Mount Questions

If yours isn’t here, just ask us.

Do I have to buy the mount from you?

No. The installation prices on our chart are labour only, so you are welcome to hand us a bracket you already bought and we will check it against your TV's VESA pattern and weight before we drill. If it is not right for the TV or the wall, we will tell you before we start rather than after.

Which mount should I get - fixed, tilt or full motion?

Fixed if the TV sits at eye level on a plain wall and never needs to move. Tilt if it is going higher than eye level, above a fireplace for example, so you can angle it down. Full motion if you need to pull it off the wall, swivel it towards another part of the room, or angle it away from window glare - which is usually the right answer in a narrow condo living room.

What is the combo deal?

It is the one price that bundles the bracket and the installation together instead of quoting them separately: a full-motion mount and installation for $359.99, against a $429.99 regular price. That covers TVs up to 65 inches on regular drywall, and wire concealment is not included in it.

Will the mount fit my TV?

That comes down to two numbers: the VESA pattern - the spacing of the four threaded holes on the back of your TV - and the weight of the panel. Send us the TV brand and model and we will confirm both. Getting this wrong is the single most common problem we are called out to fix.
